  1. Shsp INTERSECTION EMPHASIS AREA

  2. Emphasis Area Definition • The term intersection crash is defined as a crash which occurs just before, just after or inside the limits where two or more highways join or cross.

  3. Emphasis Area Goals • To reduce the number of annual roadway intersection fatalities by 10 per year by December 31, 2014 • To reduce the number of annual roadway intersection crashes involving incapacitating injuries by 100 per year by December 31, 2014

  4. Intersection Emphasis Area Objectives • To implement cost-effective countermeasures at acceptable deployment levels to achieve the planned reduction in intersection fatalities and incapacitating injury crashes • To advance new strategies and concepts that support reductions in intersection fatalities and incapacitating injuries • Program projects from current year Intersection Emphasis List

  5. Implement Flashing Yellow Arrow where applicable CMF – 0.806 (CMFs for Changing Left Turn Phasing Paper 12-2521)

  6. Implement retroreflective backplates CMF = 0.85 (CMF Clearinghouse)

  7. Implement High Friction Surface on applicable intersection approaches where applicable CMF ~ 78% for rear-end, wet road crashes (CMF Clearinghouse)

  8. Improve management of access near signalized/unsignalized intersections
