  11. 4 BOX NOTES Types of Government Aristocracy Oligarchy • Means “rule by a few” • Based on wealth, social status, and ABILITY (unlike Aristocracy) • The “few” control the military • Ruled by the nobility (rich, landowning men that come from a high ranking family) Monarchy Direct Democracy • Monarchy = “rule by one” • King rules and hold ALL or MOST of the power • The king makes laws, enforces laws, and interprets laws • The right to rule is usually tied to religion. • Democracy = “rule by men” • EVERY citizen votes on EVERY issue • Power is equally shared amongst ALL citizens
