  1. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA CROSSWALK SAFETY ISSUES AND SOLUTION

  2. Introduction • Determine source, if any, of traffic congestion • Gather opinions of traffic issues • Locate the areas with the most issues • Create viable solution to traffic issues

  3. Process • Create and distribute survey • Observe traffic on campus • Research traffic safety issues on campus • Analyze and compile data • Research solutions

  4. Survey • Focused on pedestrian safety • Distributed via SurveyMonkey.com • Completed by 55 respondents • 51 Students • 3 Professors • 1 Staff

  10. Survey Conclusions • Most feel there are unsafe crosswalks • Many have been late due to congestion • Library area is the busiest

  11. Traffic Incidents Data • USF has one of the highest incident rates between pedestrian and vehicle traffic. • In 2009, 11 major accidents involving pedestrians struck by cars, including 2 deaths (Danielson). • In 2010, 12 accidents reported on the first two days of the fall semester (Cerny) • Raised crosswalks installed in 2001 remain ineffective (ITE).

  12. Conclusion • Safety concerns exist at crosswalks. • Only a few areas are affected heavily. • Delays are also created by congestion. • Previous attempts to alleviate the issues have failed. • Accident reports show no sign of declining. • Separation of pedestrian and vehicle traffic is necessary in key locations.

  13. The Solution A crosswalk bridge will accomplish the following: • Re-route pedestrian traffic over vehicle traffic • Improve the safety of busy crosswalks • Decrease congestion and delays

  14. Recommendation • Build crosswalk bridge connecting library area to PHY area over Leroy Collins Boulevard • Recover project costs with a 10% increase in parking citation fees • Observe and collect data for two years • Determine if crosswalk bridges should be built in other areas

  15. Crosswalk Bridge Rendering

  16. Cost and Funding • Estimated cost from Gladiator Contracting Services, LLC is $330,475.00 • 10% increase in citation fees will generate $100,000/yr • All costs recovered within 4 years
