Using the UL’s newspaper collections • Printed newspapers are ordered and read in the West Room for issues after 1900, in the Rare Books Room for issues before 1900 • Most of the collection cannot be photocopied due to age, size, binding and fragile size. But other photographic/imaging processes are available. Ask at the Enquiry Desk where you submitted fetching slip or consult Imaging Services pages at http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/deptserv/imagingservices/index.html • Self service photography using your own camera is now permitted in certain parts of the library including the West Room and Rare Books. Searching for contents: printed indexes • There are relatively few printed indexes to newspapers (the next slide lists them by title): electronic access will be more useful • There are two general printed indexes British Humanities Index. 1915-. R907.18 (a partial coverage of the British quality press, but only "major articles on current affairs, political and social criticism". It is also online from 1962 onwards) Clover Newspaper Index. 1987-2001 NPR.D.28 (covers the British quality press, but is a surprisingly small publication.)

Electronic resources: historic titles Remember that the individual newspaper titles are included in Newton, LibrarySearch, ejournals list, and the overall collections are also on the Newspaper page. (See slide 2) • Electronic newspaper historic archives show the newspaper as printed and allow searching of the entire text including advertisements. They allow printing but will not email text to you (they will usually email articles references and URLs; you may be able to download a PDF).

Electronic resources: historic archives of titles no longer published • British Library Newspapers 1600-1900 brings together two BL databases • Burney Collection Newspapers (covering 17th-18th centuries) • 19th Century British Library Newspapers (48 national, regional and local titles) • Newspapers are also included in: British Periodicals I and II

British Newspaper Archive • The British Newspaper Archive http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ • This is a commercial database designed for public access and pay as you go • It includes much of the content already in 19th Century British Library Newspapers. What is new is a wide selection of historic British local newspapers – it is designed with family and local history in mind • You can search without charge, but need to pay to see text. • We do not have a subscription, but it is easy to set up your own account
