  1. The Mystery of the Unknown Cell !!

  2. Your task:You are working as an assistant in a science laboratory. Your boss comes to you with a cell from an unknown specimen. It is your job toclassify the cell as a plant or animal cell.

  3. The cell you are to examine looks like this:

  4. The Unknown cell:

  5. All of the structures within your mystery cell are called organelles. Plant and animal cells have quite a few common organelles. However, there are a few organelles that are unique to these two individual kinds of cells.

  6. You must determine which organelles belong to plant cells and which organelles belong to animal cells.

  7. To begin your detective work visit the following websites:www.cellsalive.org or http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objid=AP11604

  8. Research both the plant and the animal cell. Sketch the following organelles and write a few lines describing their function.

  9. Cell membrane Cell wall Mitochondria Endoplasmic reticulum Cytoplasm/Cytosol Vacuole Lysosome Chloroplasts Ribosomes Centrioles/ Centrosome Nucleus Nucleolus Golgi bodies Chromosomes Organelles:

  10. Now that you have a better understanding of what these organelles look like and what they do, let’s test your knowledge. (Remember, you want to impress your boss at the laboratory!)

  11. Access the following site and take the quiz. Record your first score. Fix all incorrect answers until you have achieved a 100%. Good Luck! http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/westmin/science/sbi3a1/Cells/cellquiz.htm

  12. Drawing upon all of the knowledge you have just gained about plant and animal cells, it is now time to carefully examine your mystery cell. Take a close look and identify all of the organelles you see.

  13. Look carefully!!!

  14. Is it plant or animal?

  15. Write a letter to your boss explaining your findings.

  16. Letter should include: • Identification of organelles • Omission of organelles • Reasons for classification • Justification of classification

  17. Your letter should be written in friendly format. If you need a reference, visit the following site: http://englishplus.com/grammar/00000144.htm

  18. When your letter is complete. Please submit it.
