  3. Segregation • The separation of people, usually based on race or religion

  4. Discrimination • An unfair difference in the treatment of people

  5. African Americans in Congress • During Reconstruction, African Americans began to have power in Virginia’s government, and men of all races could vote.

  6. Jim Crow Laws • Laws passed by southern states that established segregation or separation of the races and reinforced prejudices held by whites.

  7. What is a prejudice? • Unreasonable opinion about someone • Sometimes the white people would call the black people mean names

  8. “Jim Crow” Laws • Had an effect on the lives of African Americans and American Indians.
