Arna Bontemps • born on October 13, 1902, died June 4, 1973 • Born in Alexandria, Louisiana, • At the age of three his moved to California • Arna grew up in California • Attended San Fernando Academy boarding school • His father told him not to act colored • In 1924 he accepted a teaching position in Harlem • He married Alberta Johnson, a former student they had six kids

Three T’s Theme -this story was about a slave revolt in Virginia lead by a slave named Gabriel -this story is about how you should get up and stand up for your right Tone -the mood of this is a bit sad but if you think of it its pretty uplifting -the feeling I get from the story is a feeling of willpower Technique -the form is just a typical story lay out -there was nothing special about the language -

  4. Contributions • Worked with people like Langston Hughes and Jean Toomer • Joined a group of African American artist that brought attention to the movement • Many of his poems showed themes of endurance and dignity ad he fought to reflect traditions and culture of the African American race
