Anticipation Guide • I will understand how Jefferson created the two party system (Democrats and Republicans) • I will understand that Manifest Destiny was the belief it was the US’s destiny to move west • I will know that the Louisiana Purchase was the first expansion of the US westward • I will analyze the findings of Lewis and Clark • I will evaluate the impact of Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal on the Native Americans • I will analyze how Manifest Destiny would lead to the Civil War

Who and What of Westward Expansion • Thomas Jefferson: the 3rd President, made the Louisiana Purchase, and started the Democratic-Republican party system • Lewis and Clark: two men selected by Jefferson to explore the Louisiana territory • Sacagawea: Native American guide who helped L&C on their journey • James Monroe: 5th President, created stricter laws in foreign policy from Europe which created a strong America • Andrew Jackson: aggressive 7thPresident who led the removal of Native Americans from their lands for American expansion • Cherokee Natives: large group of Native Americans forcibly removed from their homes and land in the Trail of Tears • Manifest Destiny: the belief it was the US’s destiny to expand west to the Pacific Ocean • Louisiana Purchase: in 1803 the land Jefferson bought from France • Monroe Doctrine: foreign policy that distanced the US from Europe • Cotton Gin: invention that made “Cotton King” of the south

US: The Early Years • George Washington was elected the first President • Federalists (who wanted a strong central gov’t) were the majority political party • When Washington was done serving the nation, a new political party had emerged- Democratic-Republicans • The Democratic-Republicans wanted: • Limited national gov’t • Feared the rule of one or a few • Supported farmers and tradesmen • Thomas Jefferson was the first Democratic-Republican

Jefferson’s Democracy • Activity: • In each envelop there are 24 quotes from Thomas Jefferson • Seat 1 will take one quote and read it aloud • As a group determine which topic the quote involves • Together determine what Jefferson thinks about that topic. • Continue going around the table until all 24 quotes are complete • Example: “Under the laws of nature, all men are born free; every one comes into the world with a right to his own person, which includes the liberty of moving and using it at his own will.
