  1. What are X-Rays and how do they work? X-rays are electromagnetic waves that enter the body of a person to produce the images of internal parts of the body like organs and bones. We use X-rays to detect the abnormalities in the body and any injury or disease in the internal organs of a body. X-rays are used in different procedures of medicine. It includes: CT scan or Computed Tomography- They produced a more detailed image of the internal part of the body. Radiography – It produced the still X-ray image. Fluoroscopy – it enables the observation of motion in the body in certain diagnostic processes and treatments.   

  2. X-ray has no side effects as in this process very less amount of radiation is produce. But it is suggested to reduce the amount of radiation as much as possible. A high amount of X-rays are used in therapy or radiation oncology to avoid or prevent the cancer cells from multiplicating. Is X-ray safe? Usually, X-ray has no side effects on body. It is very uncommon to have adverse effects of X- ray radiation. For example, the amount of X-ray radiation absorbed by the human body from simple X-ray processes like Chest X-ray, abdomen X-ray, X-ray of arms, shoulders, knees, skull, or pelvic region is very low. This amount of X-ray radiation is very low and causes no side effects on the human body. The Procedure involves higher radiation doses. There are certain cases when a high dose of X-ray radiation is use. In the process of Computed Tomography or CT scan and intervention procedures which include angiography and Cardiac Catheterization, high doses of X-ray radiation are used. This X-ray dose is about 100 to 1000 times more than a chest X-Ray. What are the possible side effects of radiation on the human body? Usually, there are no side effects of X-rays on the Human body till now. Procedures that require high doses of X-ray radiations like CT scans, multiple exposures, and intervention procedures, sometimes case=use some biological effects. A higher dose of radiation means a higher risk of adverse effects. These side effects could cause redness in the skin, hair loss, infertility, and cataracts. Till now, there is no report of causing infertility or cataracts are recorded due to X-ray radiation used in diagnostic and interventional procedures. Interventional procedures that require fluoroscopy that lasts usually for one hour or more; have very rare chances of skin injuries by the radiation. Nuclear medicine examinations and X-rays have a slightly increased chance of cancer. This risk increases with the number of doses and with the number of procedures.
