  1. The Language of Invisible Man

  2. Independent Reading • Focus Question: Using textual evidence, make a claim about a time your character went through a change in the novel and how that change impacted them. • Learning Target: I can use textual evidence to identify a change my character has endured and the effect it had on my characterin the novel.

  3. January 29, 2014 Learning Targets: 1) I will be able to articulate how Ralph Ellison uses figurative language in Invisible Man to give the reader a glimpse into the experiences of the protagonist. 2) I will be able to use figurative language in my writing to provide my peers with insight into my own personal experiences.

  4. Tell Us How You Feel Today • Describe how your day is going by writing one simile or metaphor to share with the class. For example, “My day is going as smooth as pudding.”

  5. Why Use Figurative Language? • What is figurative language? Can you give me examples of figurative language? • What is the purpose and reason for using figurative language?

  6. Figurative Language in Invisible Man • What were your initial thoughts or reactions as you read Chapter Eight of Invisible Man? • What was happening in Chapter 8? • What do you think was the theme of Chapter 8? • Did you notice any uses of figurative language in Chapter 8?

  7. Figurative Language in Invisible Man • The theme of Chapter 8 can be summed up in one word: changes. • As a reader, we see the protagonist struggle as he realizes he will never go back to college and must attempt to now make it on his own in the real world. Can you give examples of this from the text? • Ellison uses figurative language in the novel to help the reader understand how the protagonist feels about the changes he is going through.

  8. Figurative Language in Invisible Man • Look at the following example of figurative language from Chapter 8: “I recalled the heavy gold chain that hung between Dr. Bledsoe’s vest pockets…he’d clear his throat and give a deeply intoned order, as though each syllable were pregnant with nuances of profoundly important meaning” (Ellison 163). • Identify the use of figurative language in this passage. How does Ellison’s use of figurative language help us understand the protagonist’s experience?

  9. What do you think? • What types of figurative language did Ellison use in Chapter 8? • How did the use of figurative language effectively or ineffectively express the experiences of the protagonist to you as the reader?

  10. Personal Use of Figurative Language • Now it’s your turn. Just like Ellison, we can use figurative language to help give readers a glimpse into our experiences. • Think back to the journal entry you wrote last week about feeling invisible. In one paragraph, using at least one simile and one metaphor, describe how you felt so that your peers can understand how you felt in that moment.

  11. Personal Use of Figurative Language • For example, “I felt invisible when I was not chosen for the scholarship for the college I wished to attend. I felt like one tiny speck of sand compared to the hundreds of others applying for the scholarship. But yet, in reality, not being chosen was actually a gift and opened up doors to dreams I never could have realized without enduring that experience.”

  12. Homework • Post your figurative writing describing a time when you felt invisibleonthe Class Blog located on Teacher Web by Thursday @ 2:30pm. • Comment on your assigned peer’s post by Friday @ 2:30pm.

  13. Homework • When writing your comment, identify your peer’s use of figurative language and discuss how it helps describe their experience to you. • For example if I was leaving a comment on Ellison’s simile on page 163 I would say, “Ellison use of figurative language is seen in the phrase, “I spread the letters upon the dresser like a hand of high trump cards.” This is an example of a simile. This is a good description of how Ellison felt, because one sees that he is trying to make himself feel better about himself by comparing his letters to a “hand of high trump cards.”
