  2. Geography • Located on Thames River • Located in London Metropolitan Agglomeration (3,236 sq. miles) • London Basin underlies city (160 mi. long) • Ludgate Hill, Corn Hill, & Tower Hill located at edges of city • Central London at sea level

Saint Paul’s Cathedral • Architect- Sir Christopher Wren • Built from 1675-1710 • Constructed of masonry, stone, timber & brick • Largest cathedral in England • Dome 366 ft. above street • Built to replace old St. Paul’s after destroyed in Great Fire of London in 1666 • Important events- funerals(Sir Winston Churchill), weddings(Prince Charles & Princess Diana), & jubilees(Queen Victoria & King George V)

The Globe • Remodel of theater where Shakespeare's drama performed • William Shakespeare- greatest play writer & poet of all time • Known for Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Julius Caesar, & Othello • Influenced romantic writers(Herman Melville, Charles Dickens, & Thomas Hardy) • Added new words to English language… (bloody, bump, hurry, lonely, road, suspicious etc.)

Richmond Palace • Henry VII built it on the site of the old Palace of Shene which was destroyed in a fire • There was a chapel, wine cellar, Great Hall, Great Court, Great Orchard, Fountain Court, and much more • There were 3 stories with 12 rooms on each floor, and the outside was white stone • The name was changed from Shene to Richmond because Henry VII and his father were the Earls of Richmond

Buckingham Palace • Served as the official London residence of Britain's rulers since 1837 • There are 775 rooms; 19 state rooms, 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms • The Throne Room was sometimes used during Queen Victoria's rule for court assemblies and as another dancing room • The Ballroom is the largest multipurpose room and has been used as a concert hall, a stage for performances of the arts, and investitures
