  2. Technology and society: Past and Future“What we have learned from our ancestors”… The purpose of technology is to produce applications to improve our material environment. Inventors, engineers, technicians, mechanics, scientists have existed for thousands of years…humans have applied their knowledge and technical experience to improve our quality of life.

  3. Guidelines • Three students per group • Select a topic on a technological topic related to your program and research past and present on its technological development, explanation and progress. • Select a topic from the web site provided Nova Science/ Greatest Inventions of All Time

Power Point Presentation Criteria Create a power point presentation with the following headings: 1) Title of presentation (topic) 2) Technical vocabulary (4-5 words) 3) Past: Background information of historical invention 4) Present: Background information on development and what we have learned from the past 5) Reflection – what have we learned? 6) Group discussion: 2-3 critical questions / thoughts??? 7) Interactive Group Activity for classmates

Sample Group ActivityObelisk erecting experiment • In what ways is using a screwdriver to remove the lid of a paint can similar to lifting an obelisk? • Archaeological evidence suggests that ancient peoples were able to move enormous objects, some in excess of several tons, without the mechanical advantage provided by modern inventions such as the crane. • Think of the colossal carved statues, or moai, on Easter Island; the massive obelisks in Egypt; and the stone monoliths at Stonehenge. Without mechanical equipment, how were these feats achieved? With simple machines, namely levers, which are designed to make work easier for humans by moving or manipulating objects using less physical effort.
