9. 4 Assure vs. Ensure • Assure – To promise or say with confidence • I assure you that Korea is a very safe country. • Ensure – To make sure something will/won’t happen • To ensure the event would be successful, the committeeplanned several months in advance. HINT: The prefix “en” means to put into something. We put a lot of hard work into something to ensure it happens/doesn’t happen.

10. 5 Complement vs. Compliment • Complement – go well together • Your shirt complements your purse quite nicely. • Compliment – praise • The teacher complimented the student. HINT: I like to give compliments.

11. 6 Appraise vs. Apprise • Appraise – to assess or evaluate • My house was appraised for higher than the market value. • Apprise – to inform someone • The judge was apprised of new information. HINT: If a book is highly appraised it receives praise

12. Extensive Reading Book - Discussion • Groups of 3-4 • Question – have you picked a book out? • Yes -> title, genre, why you chose it, etc. • No -> What genre do you like? What kind of book do you want to read for this class? • http://www.maslonline.org/?page=marktwain_readers

13. Choosing an ER Book • 100-200 page requirement • Flip to several different pages throughout the book (beginning, middle, and end) • If there are 0-2 words you don’t understand on each page = Good! • 3~5+ = Not good

Current Events: Holiday Syndrome • As you read the article and think about these questions • Are there any interesting English words/phrases you’d like to learn more about? • What parts of this article do you identify with? Does this article remind you of someone in your family (or yourself?) • Do you agree that traditional holidays put more stress on women? • What do you think about doctors’ recommendations for reducing Chuseok syndrome? Do you have any other ideas that might help? • Does your family (or someone you know) do some kind of alternative Chuseok celebration? What do you think about families that do this? • Do you have any stories (funny, interesting, etc.) to share about Chuseokor Chuseok syndrome?
