  2. National Council for the Social studies…on citizenship • “NCSS believes the core mission of social studies education is to help students become …..effective citizens.”

  4. Ms. Stewart’s Respect/Expectations Poem

  5. Get into groups of 4-5 • According to your group, what are the 5 most important things to remember from the poem – why did you pick those 5?

  6. In your same groups, complete a top ten list for me from a student’s perspective. • Expectations you have of me • Expectations you have of your classmates • Things I can expect from you • It doesn’t have to rhyme, but give it a try.

  7. The following slides are the traits of effective citizenship by the National Council for the Social Studies that apply to History students.

  8. Embraces core democratic values and strives to live by them – truth, equality, justice, diversity, pursuit of happiness…. • Accepts responsibility for the well-being of oneself, one’s family and the community. • Has knowledge of the people, history, and traditions that have shaped our local communities, our nation, and the world.

  9. Is aware of issues and events that have an impact on people at local, state, national, and global levels. • Seeks information from varied sources and perspectives to develop informed opinions and creative solutions. • Has the ability to collaborate effectively as a member of a group.

  10. Why should a good citizen learn about History?

  11. Why study history? • Be able to answer that question after I read the two paragraphs.

  12. Mission statement • Statement of purpose/intent/outline of your goals. • Should be a statement for THIS CLASS, not a general statement, and not one for every class. • Be specific • I will get an A (tell me how) • I will be respectful (tell me by doing what?)

Homework • Assignments are due at the BEGINNING of the period • Late work = ½ credit; considered late after I collect • Turn in to the bucket or me, NEVER on my desk • Late work due within 5 days of an absence or considered late – includes quizzes and tests • Attach absence form or it will be considered late • I will be available to help with missed work at 7:10/2:00/guided study • www.oshstewart.pbworks.com

  15. Redo’s and Retakes • NOT for students who chose not to do it the first time • Redo’s up to the discretion of the teacher • Retakes • 1. All homework complete for the unit • 2. Reading notes for the unit • 3. Attendance at a study session after school to review unit material.

  16. Bathroom privileges • 1. Reserved for emergencies (after lunch is not an emergency). • 2. Use at appropriate times • 3. Abuse it – lose it • 4. Ask to leave, then take bathroom pass

  17. “I allow students who are respectful and productive to share room 278 with me and other students.” • Everyone has a right and a responsibility to learn. Be good citizens.
