  2. Objectives 1. Attendees will be able to conduct an effective informal observation with a focus on “non negotiable” 2. AWBAT use questions to initiate and run meaningful follow-ups with teachers 3. AWBAT target areas of need in subsequent informal observations

  3. The Terms • Assumption – feeling or thinking • Assertion – knowing based on facts • Feedback loop – time between observation and follow-up • Coach – guiding a teacher to a conclusion or idea • Instruct – showing a teacher what to do • Dictate – requiring a teacher to do something • Non-negotiable – the “must haves” of instruction and the classroom

What are non-negotiable? • These are the items EVERY classroom must have and/or EVERY instructional strategy or practice you require • Take three minutes to list your five non-negotiable and be ready to share out… • Consider the following – • What are you looking for as an administrator/coach? • What does an effective teacher do in comparison to an ineffective one? • What must the learning environment look like?

  5. Each classroom observation… • lasts 10-15 minutes • includes three instructional snapshot • “Just the facts, ma’am” - Only document what you SEE and HEAR, no “should’ves or could’ves” • ends with a “kudos” on the desk and the observation notes sent via email that includes a guiding/follow-up question

  6. Follow-ups must… • occur within 24 hours • review the facts, what was seen and what was heard • provide the teacher with time to answer your guiding/follow-up question • if necessary, lead teachers from assumptions to assertions, from vague to intentional

  7. The Follow-up to the Follow-up • How do you track areas of need and make them areas of growth? • Focus on ONE strategy or practice ONLY • Use targeted area as focal point of continued follow ups until teacher has shown mastery • Coach, Instruct, Dictate Cycle • Coach – Show, Guide, Lead • Instruct – This is how, Use this, Here is a resource • Dictate – You need to, You must, You will
