If you wish to try an alternate procedure, obtain your teacher’s approval first.

If the thermometer is mercury-filled, do not touch with the mercury or the glass with your bare skin. • Do not touch anything that may be hot, including burners, hot plates, rings, beakers, electric immersion heaters, and electric bulbs. If you must pick up something that is hot, use an insulated glove, an over mitt, a pot-holder, or some other appropriate holder.

  20. Lab Safety Rules • Report any injuries, accidents, or breakages to your teacher immediately. Also report anything that you suspect may be malfunctioning. • Work quietly so that you can hear any announcements concerning cautions and safety. • Know the locations of fire extinguishers, fire blankets, safety shower, eye wash fountain and the nearest exit.

  28. What’s Wrong With These Statements? Hal says that his teacher is solely responsible for preventing laboratory accidents. Keshia started the lab activity before reading it through completely. Ricardo decided to do a lab activity that he read about in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom. Stephanie says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them. Barbie and Ken accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage.

  29. What’s Wrong With These Statements? Hal and all students are responsible for their own safety and the safety of their classmates. Keshiawill not fully understand what is going on in the lab and may mess it up. She needed to read everything before the lab day. Ricardo is not allowed to conduct any labs without a teacher present. Stephanie must wear her safety goggles when told to do so. Barbie and Ken needed to inform the teacher of the broken beaker, so that the teacher can clean up the chemical that spilled properly. Also, the broken glass should go in a designated location, not the trash can.
