  5. The point: • The Bible can be used to justify many things, depending on what parts you read and how you decide to interpret them. • People throughout time have sometimes correctly done what God wants, and sometimes misinterpreted or done the wrong thing in spite of what God wants.

  6. Day 2 Bellringer • Find a Bible verse (using online resources amongst your table) that would justify each of the following: • Not cutting your hair ever • A woman not getting divorced even if being abused and hurt by her husband • Killing someone who doesn’t believe in God

  7. Three Major things the Bible did in the 1700’s • Enlightenment • Revolutions • Justification both for and against slavery

  8. Enlightenment • Changed the way people viewed rulers and the responsibilities of rulers • http://www.gotquestions.org/American-Revolution-Romans-13.html

  12. From revolution to being dumb • Some of the things the Bible has been used to justify are absolutely debatable…some are basically crazy

  13. How was the Earth created? • How was it described? • What were its characteristics? • What was the problem? • What happened as a result? • What does that mean for long term consequences • Coach explains why racial slavery existed…

  14. Story of Exodus • Exodus 1:8-14 • GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) • The Israelites Become Slaves • 8 Then a new king, who knew nothing about Joseph, began to rule in Egypt. 9 He said to his people, “There are too many Israelites, and they are stronger than we are. 10 We have to outsmart them, or they’ll increase in number. Then, if war breaks out, they will join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.” • 11 So the Egyptians put slave drivers in charge of them in order to oppress them through forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they increased in number and spread out. The Egyptians couldn’t stand them any longer. 13 So they forced the Israelites to work hard as slaves. 14 They made their lives bitter with back-breaking work in mortar and bricks and every kind of work in the fields. All the jobs the Egyptians gave them were brutally hard.
