  3. What is stress? • 40% of all workers today feel overworked, pressured, anxious and depressed. • They get sick as a result. • 80% of visits to GP’s stem from stress related complaints

  4. What is stress? • Stress is a mental and physiological response to events in our lives. • There are two kinds of stress: one saves us, the other kills us. • When we come under a stressor our brain releases adrenaline

  5. What is tress? • A short burst of adrenaline creates one of three responses: • Fight, the enemy I am facing • Freight, feeling terror and fear • Flight, run away quickly.

  6. What does it do? • Adrenaline increases our awareness, gives us strength and blood flows away from our extremities toward our vital organs • However if we prolong our adrenal response other things happen to us.

  7. What is burnout? • Our brain releases norepinephrine and cortisol which have other effects: • We have increased blood pressure: blood coagulation is increased to stem bleeding • And enhanced stamina • In addition…

  8. What is burnout? • Lowered testosterone levels • Higher thyroid response • Release of fatty cells into bloodstream • We become oversensitive to environmental issues • Our capacity to process food effectively becomes impaired.

  9. Lower immune response • Perhaps worst of all, our immune system becomes suppressed. • The bones slow or surpress their production of white blood cells.

  10. What causes long term burnout? Causes:Lack of taking a day off – take one off every seven!Lack of holiday’s – make sure you take regular breaks each yearLack of delegation – learn to trust others

  11. What causes long term burnout? Causes:Managing the expectation of others – don’t allow other people’s expectations to drive your lifeThe Martyr complex – feeling busy, important and being too serious

  12. What causes long term burnout? Causes:Information overload – cut yourself off from extraneous informationFeel disempowered.

  13. Externalities • Petrol prices – se by other countries • Interest rates – set by banks and government • Food prices – controlled by transport costs • Things over which you have no control
