  2. Basic Resource: Land • Land is a renewable resource • It can support new crops year after year • Land is non-renewable • Limited amount of it available ?????

  3. Land capability • So how do we determine whether the land is suitable for farming? • The Canada Land Inventory divides Canada’s land into 7 classes, each class indicates if the land is suitable for agriculture • Check out pg 266 in Making Connections 

  4. Types of farming • Type of farming= determined by natural and economic factors of the region

  5. Natural Factors • Fertility of soil • Amount of precipitation • Length of growing season (temp above 5.6 degrees)

  6. Economic Factors • Cost of land • Ex) if farmland is expensive, the goods produced will have to be of high value • Transportation costs • Ex) if farm is close to its markets, perishable products (like?) can be produced • Competition • Ex) if there is an oversupply of products prices drop reduce farm incomes
