  1. How a MP3 Player Works and Operates. By: Kyle Anderson & Michael Theis

  2. What is MP3? (My little Pony 3) Perhaps? • MP3, or MPEG Audio Layer 3, is one method for compressing audio files. MPEG is the acronym for Moving Picture Experts Group. • The MP3 file format revolutionized music distribution in the late 1990s, when file-swapping services and the first portable MP3 players made their debut.

  3. Compression Bright Side • The MP3 compression system reduces bytes, (like MB or GB) So that more songs can be carried in a portable device. Down Side • The draw back is that by compressing, you lose more of the song’s quality. Above: Compression of the co-worker.

  4. More Compression • Considering the average song is about 4 minutes, on a CD that song would take 40 MB. • However through MP3 compression, it would take only 4 MB of space. In terms of the iPod: • An MP3 player with 1 GB of storage would be able to hold about 240 songs. The equivalent of 20 CDs! • However, now some CDs do support MP3 files. Below: Compression of the face

  5. Are there other forms? • While MP3 is perhaps the most well know file format, but there are other formats that can be played on a MP3 player as well. • WMA - Windows Media Audio • WAV - Waveform Audio • MIDI - Music Instrument Digital Interface. • AAC - Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) • Ogg Vorbis - A free, open, and un-patented music format • ADPCM - Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation • ASF - Advanced Streaming Format • VQF - Vector Quantization Format Can you find Waldo? (Hint: you’re not trying hard enough)

  6. The Technology Behind it. • Unlike earlier forms of music players such as CDs or tapes, many MP3 players do not require moving parts to operate. They use instead solid-state memory. • However, these are Flash type MP3 players, and they are not capable of holding as much as hard drive types. • On the down side, hard drive types, such as Creative nomads or the iPod also run a higher risk of failure, since it has moving parts like a computer. Trippy, Mikulec-inspired background.

  7. More on Technology • MP3 player tasks • Store music • Play music • Allow the user to listen to the song • How this is Accomplished • MP3 player pulls song from it’s memory. • Then decompresses the MP3 encoding • Player runs the decompressed bytes through a digital to analog converter. • Finally, amplifies the analog signal allowing the song to be heard. You guys are a disgrace to MP3 players everywhere.

  8. Components • While the specific components may bary, here are some of the basic parts to a MP3 player. • Data port • Memory • Microprocessor • Digital Signal Processor (DSP) • Display • Playback controls • Audio port • Amplifier • Power supply It also doubles as a Clock!

  9. MP3 File Structure • MP3 files are made up of multiple MP3 frames which consist of the MP3 header and the MP3 data. This sequence of frames is called an elementary Stream. • The MP3 header consists of a sync word which is used to identify the beginning of a valid frame. • This is followed by a bit saying that this is a MPEG standard and two bits saying that the layer 3 is being used (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) or MP3 for short.
