  2. H.W. • Modern Progressive Ideas, Newspaper Assignment • Homework Due: Friday 12-21-2012 • Directions: see website • Multiple Choice District Assessment 12-21-2012 (in the district assessment category, could help your grade significantly if you do well)

  3. Warm- Up • Be Sure To: • In looking through the chapter, what will you do in finding evidence to be sure that your argument, and your president will be deemed the strongest and responsible for the most progressive national reforms.

  4. 18.1 • Answering the Questions: • Who were the two people in Conflict? • What was the focus of their argument? • Who won the argument? How? • What is the chapter’s essential question? • What is one progressive goal that Roosevelt promoted through national policies?

  5. Structured Discussion • Who deserves the most credit for promoting progressive goals in national policies? • Students are split into groups representing the three presidents • Are to share on that president’s accomplishments, based on the topic of discussion, offering at least one example of what the administration did to promote progressive goals in addressing the topic

  6. 18.2-18.4 • Rules to the structured conversation • Each speaker must refer to the previous speaker by saying “President _______, our group agrees or disagrees because….” When you are finished discussing your point you can call on the next president by name” • You should focus on actions your president did that were progressive goals, and highlight the actions of the other presidents that were counter to progressive goals.

  9. Section 2 • Which progressive president deserves the most credit for reforming the national government?

  10. Debrief • Do you think a president deserves more credit for starting reform on the national level or for accomplishing the most? Why, what actions do they do? • Think back to the Essential Question. How well did Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson promote progressive goals in national policies?   • On what ways did the progressive presidents move the country closer to America’s five founding ideals? • In what ways was progress toward the ideals not achieved?

Closing • What can we currently say about the accomplishments of the progressives overall? • In looking at/ reflecting on newspaper articles for the H.W. • What are your going to be sure to….. • I am going to be sure to…. • Which progressive reform most matches events/ what is currently happening in the United States?
