  8. What is a Tsunami? • Japanese for harbor wave. • It is a, large wave that uses the whole water column to transfer its energy. • In English, a really big wave!

  9. Why not a Tidal Wave? • A tidal wave is caused by tides (earth and moon interaction) • Anywhere from 1mm to 20cm • A Tsunami is • Anywhere from 1m to 300 m Tsunami Wave Tidal Wave GOOD BAD

  10. So, What is a Tsunami? • A wave caused by movement of water under the water. • Like an Earthquake • Or a large landslide

  11. Christmas Tsunami • December 26, 2004 – An earthquake (9.0) moved the water off the coast of Indonesia. • Within hours a tsunami hits the coasts.

  13. How tsunamis kill? • Flooding • Fast larges waves catch people off guard • Knock over building • Destroy roads • Remove anything in its way that’s not built strongly

  14. How do we save or predict tsunamis? • If it is a wave we can measure the changes in waves in the ocean with buoys. If they move vertical more then normal there is a warning. • If there is an earthquake nearby then their might be a tsunami wave.
