  1. The SIX Essential Elements of Geography The World in Spatial Terms • Using various tools like maps, GPS, satellite images to study the world • Explaining why people and places are where they are Places and Regions • Common characteristics that certain populated places share • We create regions to group people/places together that share these common characteristics (ex: New England, Midwest, etc) Physical Systems • Earth’s surface is shaped by processes such as erosion, volcanic eruptions, and the movement of glaciers • Ecosystems like tropical rain forests are where they are for a reason! Human Systems • Traditionally people migrate to find more hospitable places to live • Trade with other groups is VITAL for survival and growth! Environment & Society • Humans constantly modify/change their environment in an attempt to improve their surroundings (ex: irrigation, cutting down trees) • Physical systems like mountains/deserts influence where we live The Uses of Geography • Archeologists study artifacts to learn about past civilizations • Geographers plan for the future by learning from actions of past civilizations
