  4. DoD Family Advocacy ProgramAbuse Severity Levels • MILD: Physical abuse or neglect with no or mild physical injury, and no emotional injury. Emotional abuse that is potentially harmful. No treatment is required. • MODERATE: Minor to moderate physical injury requiring one or more outpatient visits. Emotional injury requiring short-term mental health care. • SEVERE: Physical injury requiring inpatient treatment or causing temporary or permanent disfigurement. Sexual contact. Emotional injury requiring long-term mental health care. May require alternative placement to protect the victim.
