  1. I can compare equivalent ratios. I can use equivalent ratios to solve 4 out of 5 problems. Real World Connections: sports, cooking, shopping Warm Up

  2. What is an ANALOGY? • An analogy compares two things and finds some relationship that exists. Example: Dog is to bark as cat is to _____ Hot is to cold as new is to _____

  3. What is a Ratio? • A ratio makes comparisons between two Numbers. • A ratio can be written in 5 ways 1 to 4 1:4 ¼ 0.25 25% These are ratios represented as a decimal (by dividing) & a percent.

  4. Example of ratios in sports • Football Football statisticians keep track of the percent of successful field goals made by a kicker using the following ratio: So, what is a kicker’s kicking ratio if he attempted 35 field goals and completed 30 of them?

  5. Equivalent ratios represent the same numbers. To check if they are equivalent, write both ratios in simplest form and see if they are the same. Which ratios are equivalent? 2 to 3 and 8 to 6 5 to 10 and 15 to 30 12 : 2 and 6 : 1 Equivalent Ratios

  6. 12 45 8 30 Possible answer: , Possible answer: , 1 3 14 42 You try… Find a ratios that is equivalent to each given ratio. 4 15 7 21

  7. Real Life Ex: Horticulture Carlos feeds his houseplants with a mixture of liquid plant food and water. This mixture calls for 3 parts plant food to 8 parts water. • What is the ratio of plant food to water? • How much plant food should he mix with 40 fl oz of water?

  8. Method 1 Make a table and extend it to 40 oz. So, Carlos should mix 15 fl oz of plant food with 40 fl oz of water. Method 2 Set up as a fraction & figure out the factor used to get the new num. or denom. Answers to Example

  9. Classwork 1. Make a table to find 3 equivalent ratios for the ratio: 3 to 5 2. Put in simplest form to see if these ratios are equivalent: 12:15 and 27: 36 3. Kate poured 8 oz of juice from a 64 oz bottle. Brian poured 16 oz of juice from a 128 oz bottle. Are the ratios of poured juice to starting amount of juice equivalent?
