Eleven men were killed from falls, and nineteen men were saved by the safety net. Ten of the eleven deaths occurred when the scaffolding crashed into the safety net, as described in the story. • Many people did not believe that the bridge could be built or that it would stay up after it was built because the water is deep, and winds of up to eighty miles per hour can produce waves fifty feet tall.
