  4. Chapter 3 • Indelible (adj): impossible to remove, permanent • Render (v):to make or cause to become • Miffed (adj): put in a bad mood, annoyed or offended

  5. Chapter 4 • Bellow (n):roar, loud animal cry • Chide (v): to scold • Secluded (adj): kept away from sight or activity

  6. Chapters 5&6 • Console (v): to soothe the grief, comfort • Strewn (v): spread by scattering • Retort (v):to answer back sharply

  7. Chapter 7 • Accost (v): to approach and speak aggressively • Vacate (v): to make empty or unoccupied • Tentative (adj): not fully worked out or developed, uncertain
