Introduction • Have you ever been told that you need more support or details in your writing? One simple way to do that is by adding “FRIES” to your writing. • The goal is to include some “FRIES” in all of your answers and paragraphs. The more “FRIES” you include in your writing, the more support you will have.
What are FRIES? • Facts and Figures • Reasons • Incidents • Examples/Expert Testimony • Sensory Details
F= Facts • Add interesting facts or figures to your writing. Facts are considered true statements; they are not opinions. Yokosuka Middle School has 537 students. Ms. Leach is the new principal of YMS. YMS has adopted the FRIES strategy as part of their Continuous School Improvement intervention.
F= Figures • Figures are like statistics! They help drive a point home. • Examples of Figures or Statistics: *530 of the students polled agree that YMS is amazing… * 1/3 of YMS students are on Instagram.
R= Reasons • Develop reasons to support the main idea. Reasons are a cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event. • For example, if the prompt asks you why technology should be used in the YMS classroom, you should have reasons to support that idea. • Reason 1- Technology engages students. • Reason 2- Our world depends on technology, therefore we should use it in the classroom. • Reason 3- Technology appeals to all types of learners.
I= Incidents • Tell a story to support your reasons. • For example, if the reason YMS students should use technology is that it “engages all students,” then you need to tell a story that supports that reason. • We recently received twenty-two new computers for room 318. Students were so excited about having a fully equipped computer lab. These new computers booted up within a minute and students were busily typing their creative writing stories and sharing their drafts with their teacher via google docs.
E= Examples/Expert Opinion • Examples are one of a number of things. Some examples of electives offered at YMS are Yearbook, Art, Robotics, PE, and Humanities. • Examples are an instance demonstrating a rule or method “a2 + b2 = c2,”Ms. Cobb reminded. • Expert Opinion comes from your text or research; this is when you include quotes by experts on the subject as your support • Ms. Hertz, YMS librarian, says… • Assistant Principal Ms. Kathleen Smith states…
Sensory Details • Sensory details appeal to your five senses (taste, touch, sight, smell, & hearing) • The storm caused the waves to violently crash against the sea wall. • The park was covered in a pink canopy of blossoms. • The sea hawk’s talon ripped my flesh as the giant bird stole my McDonald’s cheeseburger. • Use sensory details when describing something in detail
Things to Think About • You should have “FRIES” in every answer, but you won’t necessarily have all “FRIES”in each answer. • When writing an essay, each paragraph should contain “FRIES!” • By the time you finish revising with “FRIES,” your paper or answer will be far more powerful! • One more thing, if you’re a visual learner, I highly suggest you underline or highlight the “FRIES” you include. That is why our “FRIES” are colorful. Good luck!!!
