  1. HBCU’s “Blacker the college, sweeter the knowledge.”

  2. MISSION • The goal of HBCU’s were to educate and train African Americans to become productive citizens. • Most HBCU’s focused on teacher education while some focused on trades such as agriculture.

  3. FYI Most graduates of HBCU’s go on to become teachers even to this very day.

  4. FIRST HBCU • The very FIRST HBCU was established before Reconstruction. • The African Institute in Pennsylvania, was later renamed after its owner George Cheyney. It is known today as simply Cheyney University.

  5. NUMBERS & LOCATION • There are a total of 105 HBCU’s • Almost all HBCU’s are located in states that were once “slave states” during the Civil War.

  6. NUMBERS & LOCATION NORTH CAROLINA HAS MORE HBCU’S THAN ANY OTHER STATE IN THE COUNTRY. 11

  9. POPULATION Student population is smaller than White colleges Class sizes are smaller = tighter teacher relationship Family atmosphere exists among students and faculty.

  10. POPULATION CLASSROOMS ARE MUCH DIFFERENT THAN WHAT ONE MIGHT SEE IN A TYPICAL WHITE COLLEGE

  11. HBCU’S HAVE MORE OF A FAMILY-LIKE ATMOSPHERE THAN OTHER COLLEGES BECAUSE THERE AREN’T AS MANY STUDENTS AND STUDENTS SHARE MANY QUALITIES & TRAITS

  12. POPULATION THE MAJORITY OF HBCU’S RANGE FROM 2, 000 – 5, 000 STUDENTS

  13. POPULATION • THERE ARE “LARGE” HBCU’S HOWEVER. THE LARGEST IS FLORIDA A & M WHICH HAS APPROXIMATELY 12, 000 STUDENTS

  14. POPULATION THERE ARE NOW WHITE STUDENTS WHO ATTEND HBCU’S WHITE STUDENTS EARN MINORITY SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND HBCU’S

  15. SCORES & ACCEPTANCE MANY HBCU’S LOWER THEIR REQUIREMENTS AND STANDARDS TO ALLOW LESS THAN AVERAGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO GET ACCEPTED .

  16. SCORES & ACCEPTANCE SOME HBCU’S HOWEVER HAVE VERY HIGH STANDARDS AND REQUIRE MUCH MORE TO BE ACCEPTED

  17. MOREHOUSE ALL MALE SCHOOL IN ATLANTA, GA. HIGH GPA AND SAT REQUIRED FAMOUS ALUMNI

  18. SPELMAN ALL FEMALE SCHOOL IN ATLANTA, GA. HIGH GPA AND SAT REQUIRED.

  19. HOWARD VERY PRESTIGIOUS AND WELL KNOWN SCHOOL LOCATED IN WASHINGTON, DC HIGH SAT AND GPA REQUIRED

  20. COSTS • HBCU’s are not as expensive as “OTHER” colleges and universities. • Several scholarships, awards, and programs are available for those who choose to attend a HBCU.

  21. AFFORDABLE COLLEGES

  22. United Negro College Fund All Black organization that provides funding for black students to attend HBCU’s ONLY !!!!!!!!!

  23. TOM JOYNER Radio talk show host Tom Joyner always gives money to help Black students attend HBCU’s on the air.

  24. RACHEL JEANTEL You remember her…the young lady who testified for the deceased Trayvon Martin.

  25. COSTS • If you can’t afford to pay for school yourself , you can apply for financial aid. • The less money your parents make; the more you can receive.
