  1. The Cold War at Home • While there were numerous events that happened around the world, there were some events that happened at home to “promote” fear of a communist invasion. • Spies…they’re everywhere. • Igor Gouzenko

  2. Igor Gouzenko • Clerk in the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa • Had 109 documents that proved that the Soviets were operating spy rings in Canada. • This info only solidified the mistrust that already existed between Canada and the Soviet Union. • This also created hatred for any Canadian that held any type of “social” belief system. • For example: unionist were seen as communist and therefore hated. Social programs were seen as communist.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6pNM76E96Q • Igor traded this info for political asylum and died in Canada in 1982. For their own protection they were given new identities.

  3. Duck & Cover • There were numerous examples of propaganda that keep telling Canadians that the Soviets could attack at any moment. The following video would have been shown in school. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0K_LZDXp0I&feature=related • To further this fear of emanate attack there were bomb shelters constructed to protect us from Russian nuclear bombs. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip4fAqc7h3U

  4. Avro Arrow • During the Cold War there was also a feeling that we needed to protect ourselves from the Russians. Canada, like the US, spent a large amount of money developing new technologies to do so. The most famous of such developments was the Avro Arrow. While the cancellation of the program was controversial and can be attributed to many causes the technology that was developed during this time can still be seen today, such as the design of the plane. Many of the scientists that worked on the Arrow program went and worked in the US and their space program.
