  5. Historical Sites The Cloisters were originally an Augustinian Monastery, built in Montrejau, France, in the 14th Century. It was imported stone by stone to the United States by William Randolph Hearst, in the 1920's. Forty years later they were bought by Huntington Hartford, and put on Paradise Island, overlooking Nassau Harbour.

  6. Cultural Festivals Literature Robert Antoniwas born in the US to Trinidadian parents, and he was raised in The Bahamas. Robert is the author of the landmark novel Divina Trace, for which he received a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and an NEA grant. His other books include Blessed Is the Fruit, My Grandmother’s Erotic Folktales, and Carnival. He was a 2010 Guggenheim Fellow and recently received the NALIS Lifetime Literary Award from the Trinidad & Tobago National Library

Cultural Language Dress While English is the official language of the Bahamas, a vast majority of the population speaks Bahamian Dialect, which is a dialect of English intermediate between Standard English and Bahamian Dialect. There are some minor regional differences from island to island in terms of pronunciation, but generally all are the same.
