  1. Tuesday, October 30, 2012 Bell Ringer: In a paragraph, respond to the following prompt. Prompt: Why would someone want to compare the person he or she loves to a summer’s day?

The English Sonnet Notes • also known as the Shakespearean sonnet because Shakespeare perfected the form • contains fourteen lines • includes three quatrains and a concluding couplet • quatrain- rhyming four-line stanzas • couplet-pair of rhyming lines • Each quatrain makes a point or gives an example, and the couplet sums it all up. • Rhyme Scheme : Quatrain one- ABAB, Quatrain two- CDCD, Quatrain three- EFEF, Couplet-GG

  3. “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?” • Read the Shakespearean sonnet on page 574. • With a partner answer the following questions. 1. Where does each quatrain begin and end? 2. What is the rhyme scheme of each quatrain? 3. How is the third quatrain different from the first two? 4. Paraphrase the couplet.

  4. “thinking Critically” • Answer questions 1-9 on page 575. You need to answer the questions in complete sentences. • Turn into the tray upon completion.

  5. Partner English Sonnet • With a partner, compose a sonnet. The topic should be “strong favor of your beloved”. • A Shakespearean Sonnet includes 3 quatrains (4 lines each for a total of 12) and a couplet (2 lines). The entire sonnet is 14 lines. • Rhyme Scheme Quatrain one- ABAB Quatrain two- CDCD Quatrain three- EFEF Couplet-GG
