  2. What is a Locomotor Skill? • These skills are movements that move a person through space from one place to another. • These basic skills are building blocks of more difficult skills developed later in childhood.

  3. Walking • Stand with feet together • Step forward with first foot • Put all of your weight on first foot • Step forward with the other foot

  4. Walking Activities • Taking a walk with friends or family • Walk to School (if possible and safe) • Walk your dog • Walk tag (instead of running)

  5. Hopping • Start standing on both feet • Pick one leg up • Bend the standing leg • Lift the standing leg off of the ground

  6. Hopping Activities • Hop Scotch • Hopping Relay Races • Hopping tag • Hop jump roping

  7. Skipping • Start standing • Step forward with one foot • Put all weight on forward foot • Bring back foot up • Hop

  8. Skipping Activities • Skipping Relay Races • Skipping Tag • Jump Roping

  9. Leaping • Begin standing • Jump forward pushing off with one leg • Land on the opposite leg • Come back to starting position • Begin with opposite foot

  10. Leaping Activities • Leaping relay • Leap tag • Leaping Lilly Pads (poly spots used)

  11. Jumping • Begin standing with feet together • Bend knees • Lift both legs off of the ground • Bringing your body straight off the ground • Land on both feet with knees bent

  12. Jumping Activities • Two feet hop scotch • Jump Rope with feet together • Jumping relay races • Jump and Reach (use spots on the wall)

  13. Galloping • Begin standing with legs together • Step forward with one foot • Drag the second foot behind • Step in place with dragging foot • Step forward with other foot

  14. Galloping Activities • Cowboy/horse tag • Galloping Relay Races

  15. Running • Start standing with feet together • Slight lean into run • Lift Knees • Bend Elbows and swing arms • Contact with heel first • Push off from balls of feet

  16. Running Activities • Running with friends and family • Running with your dog • Playing run tag with friends • Relay Races

  17. Sliding • Step to side • Draw back foot up to the first • Repeat action landing with same foot • Move on balls of feet • Knees bent slightly • Slight lean forward at waist

  18. Sliding Activities • Sliding Shuttle Runs • Running the Bases • Slide and Stride Relay Race Wheee!

  19. Why are locomotor skills important? • Basis to all motor development • Stay fit and healthy • Important for all sports and physical activities • Helps growth and development

  20. Using Locomotor Activities Together • Use music for dancing • Walk-a-thons • Jump-a-thons • All sports
