  2. Compare- to describe the relationship between two or more numbers Ex: When we say 4 is greater than 2, we make a comparisonof 4 and 2. In other words, we told how 4 and 2 are related.

  3. Comparison Symbols < means less than > means greater than =means equal to *Think of the >, < as hungry alligator mouths. They always want to eat the bigger number.

  4. Reading Comparison Expressions 4 < 5 four is less than five 3 = 3 three is equal to three 9 > 8 nine is greater than eight

  5. Comparing Two Numbers Make a place value chart to help compare the two numbers. H T O 8 1 2 7 We can see that 81 is bigger than 27 by looking in the tens place. 81 > 27 or 27 < 81

  6. Comparing Two Numbers H T O 9 7 2 9 6 5 We start by comparing the hundreds place, but they are the same. We can see that 972 is bigger than 965 by looking in the tens place. 972 >965 or 965 < 972

  7. Comparing Two Numbers Th H T O 3 6 1 4 3 5 2 7 We start by comparing the thousands place, but they are the same. We can see that 3,614 is bigger than 3,527 by looking in the hundreds place. 3,614 >3,527 or 3,527< 3,614

  8. Comparing Three Numbers H T O 3 1 2 6 2 8 0 9 7 We start by finding the smallest number, which is 97. The next smallest number is 312. The last number is 628. 97 < 312 < 628 or 628 > 312 > 97
