What We Do • Monitor compliance with the Common Assessment Plan (CAP) • www.cote.illinois.edu/about/governance/policies/CAP_Undergraduate.pdf • Criminal Background Check (fingerprinting) (more on this later) • Annual Bloodborne Pathogen Training • GPA (content, professional education, UI, and overall) (2.5) • Grades in content/professional education (C or better) • Safety Education Module • Mandated Reporter Training/acknowledgement • Student Teaching Agreement

  4. What We Do (continued) • Answer Certification Questions • Answer Endorsement Questions • Complete Final Audit for Licensure/Recommendation for licensure

  5. Professional Educator License • Moved to a new system on July 1, 2013 • Illinois Professional Educator License • Initial, Standard, and Nat’l Board certification has gone away

Endorsements • Requirements are listed in our website • Middle grade endorsements (grades 5-8) • Confined to Elementary Ed candidates • Content specific • Typically 18 hours in subject • Exceptions: Math/English as a Second Language/Bilingual • Recommend obtaining at least two endorsements • State needs: math, science, foreign language, ESL, bilingual

Endorsements (continued) • All middle grade endorsements require Middle Grade Coursework • CI 410, EPS 427, EPSY 430 (if from this campus) • Online through UI (Summers) • Other institutions (link on CoTE website) • Most students take between junior/senior year • Can delay certification and take summer after graduation

Endorsements (continued) • Social Science requirements met (If MG courses are taken) • Close in General Science (14-18) • Most physical and life science courses count • Close in Language Arts (13-20) • English, Journalism, Speech, Creative Writing, BTW • Something outside of these areas should check with Council • Area of Concentration gives you a start • Can use Gen Ed courses if they apply

Endorsements (continued) • Foreign language • K-4, 5-8: 18 hours of coursework or pass content test • Recommend passing content test for any foreign language endorsement (for “Highly Qualified” Status) • If you want to be endorsed in a foreign language outside grade range of certificate, come talk to us.

  10. Endorsements (continued • K-3 (or) K-4 • Limited number available • Bilingual, ESL, Foreign Language • Reading Teacher & LBSI (available only to grad students)

  11. Early Childhood Special Ed Approval • Only available to Early Childhood Education candidates • Curriculum is built into Early Childhood program • Qualifies you to teach Special Education (Pre K) • If you want to teach Special Education K-3, must pursue LBSI endorsement (grad only)

  12. Testing • Had to use the ACT, pass Basic skills or TAP to be admitted. • No additional cert tests taken first year of program • Elementary/Middle Grade or Early Childhood Education test • Must take/pass prior to student teaching (state law) • Assessment of Professional Teaching: Grades B-3 (Early Chlhd), K-9 (El Ed), or non grade specific version.

  13. Things To Remember • If you change your name, change it in Banner and notify the Council • If you move, change your address in Banner. • CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE

ISBE Rules • No professional education or content course with a grade lower than a ‘C’ may be used toward certification, endorsement, or approval • No professional education or content course taken for CR/NC or Pass/fail may be used toward certification, endorsement or approval • Advance Placement credit MAY be used • Proficiency Credit may NOT be used

Criminal Background Check(fingerprinting) • Directions, forms, and links can be found under www.cote.illinois.edu and then, in the right column under “Criminal Background Check” • You must go through Accurate Biometrics • Office locations, days, and times can be found at http://www.accuratebiometrics.com/fingerprint_Region_Map.asp • Be sure to fill out and use the COTE form • http://www.cote.illinois.edu/fingerprintform.pdf • If you don’t hear from the COTE that you have cleared within 3 weeks, contact my office.
