Surveys are At Their Best When Results Can be Contrasted or compared • Look for groups within your data to contrast with each other. Resist “un-tethered” reporting! • Borrow / steal then assimilate questions from other sources into what your are examining. • Look for new, unexpected sources for data/ questions (PEW, MacArthur Foundation reports, etc.) “I have been an unabashed fan of NPR for many years, and have stolen untold excellent ideas from its programming”- Ted Koppel
Surveys are At Their Best When Results Can be Contrasted or compared Educational Attainment – No Comparison

In Deciding who gets your survey sometimes less can be much more • Ask yourself what kind of goals you have for your survey: Is this discovery or a test? • Sometimes specific groups provide more tailored/ useful feedback than the general population especially around technology or innovations. • Volvo has found that if they meet the expectations of women they exceed the expectations of men.
Embrace data snooping! • Don’t be afraid to ask some different questions in your surveys. Participants will look at them as a break, and you could get some interesting information. • Length is always a concern, but put as many demographic, profiling questions into the mix as you can. It leads to a richer profile that could be more useful. • There are a growing list of companies that sell huge consumer and demographic datasets, but they are expensive (i.e., AXIOM, Simmons)
Embrace data snooping! A Profile Example for a Mentoring Program -Using a Profile for Mentor Recruitment- Some collected demographics on target mentor: - Have a young child (<5 years old) at home - Enjoy collaborative video games (World of Warcraft) - Shop at discounters like Costco or Sam’s weekly - Feel like they would not offer much as a mentor - Watch TV, and particularly like MONK reruns
Embrace data snooping! A Profile Example for a Mentoring Program -Using a Profile for Mentor Recruitment- OK with technology -- could be good at distance mentoring. Have a young child (<5 years old) at home Enjoy collaborative video games (World of Warcraft) Possible corporate donors to mentor program. Shop at discounters like Costco or Sam’s weekly Would Tony Shalhoub do a piece to recruit mentors? Feel like they would not offer much as a mentor Watch TV, and particularly like MONK reruns
