Butler, • and LTG Wade Hampton • Intend to isolate and • engage wing of GEN • Sherman’s Federal • forces to delay • consolidation with • Federal forces on • coast • Federals (Union): • GEN Sherman and MG Kilpatrick • Intend to move east of Charlotte and destroy • Fayetteville arsenal/reunite with Feds on coast • MG Kilpatrick’s troops create illusion of moving • towards Charlotte, but move east towards • Fayetteville (on what is now Fort Bragg land)

Positioning • Confederates: • MG Butler’s • advance guard • arrives at Yadkin • Rd. and Morganton • Rd. before Kilpatrick’s • advance guard; • captures Kilpatrick’s • advance guard when • they arrive • Federals: • Kilpatrick’s scouts camp at Monroe’s Crossroads, • south of Nicholson Creek • Kilpatrick and detail from 3rd Brigade stay behind • at Monroe house to direct 2nd Brigade

  4. Preparing for Attack • Confederates: • LTG Hampton proposes dawn attack • across Nicholson Creek tributary • Attack to be led by Butler from north, • Wheeler from northwest, and Hume • from west • Federals: • Camped

  5. Attack! • Confederates: • Charge past Monroe house into • camp • Federals: • Flee south to Nicholson Creek • swamps

  6. Federals Regroup • Confederates: • Search for ammunition, • clothing, and food in camp • Federals: • Regrouping in and around • Nicholson Creek’s swamps • Joined by Kilpatrick and his • contingent (had skirted around • Confederate troops to regroup • with Federals) • Scouts from south of Nicholson • Creek join the line forming for • the counterattack

  7. Counterattack! • Confederates: • Unprepared; leave gunnery • unattended • Federals: • Kilpatrick not identified by • Confederates at Monroe house • Launch counterattack just as • Confederates leave gunnery

  8. Battle Ends • March 10, 1865 • Confederates: • Scattered, disorganized at onset • Advances repulsed • LTG Wheeler and LTG Hampton • confer and decide to • withdrawal • Federals: • Federals advance into camp • under cover of gunnery • Exhaustion prevents pursuit of • Confederates

  9. Monroe’s Crossroads Battle Site Today • Contains commemorative markers and graves representing ~ 200 killed • CRMP Staff Ride available (must coordinate with CRMP in advance)
