  2. Rotations and Symmetry 13.6 LESSON A rotation is a transformation in which a figure is turned about a fixed point, called the center of rotation. The angle of rotation is formed by rays drawn from the center of rotation through corresponding points on an original figure and its image. The direction of rotation can be clockwise or counterclockwise. In a rotation, a figure and its image are congruent.

  6. Rotations and Symmetry 13.6 LESSON 90˚ Rotations In this book, all rotations in the coordinate plane are centered at the origin. You can use coordinate notation to describe a 90˚ rotation of a figure about the origin. Switch the coordinates, then multiply the new y-coordinate by –1. Switch the coordinates, then multiply the new x-coordinate by –1. (x, y) (y, –x) (x, y) (–y, x)

Then find the coordinates of the vertices of the image after a 90˚ clockwise rotation, and draw the image. First draw ABC. Then, to rotate ABC90˚ clockwise, switch the coordinates and multiply the new y-coordinate by –1. (y, –x) A'(4, 3) B'(3, 2) C'(1, 2) Finally, drawA'B'C' as shown.   8. Rotations and Symmetry 13.6 LESSON 180˚ Rotations To rotate a point 180˚ about the origin, multiply each coordinate by –1. The image is the same whether you rotate the figure clockwise or counterclockwise. (x, y) (–x, –y)

Then find the coordinates of the vertices of the image after a 180˚ rotation, and draw the image. First, draw MNP. Then, to rotate MNP180˚, multiply the coordinates by –1.   10. Rotations and Symmetry 13.6 LESSON Rotational Symmetry A figure has rotational symmetry if a rotation of 180˚ or less clockwise (or counterclockwise) about its center produces an image that fits exactly on the original figure.
