  2. Vocab Star systems that have two stars are called double stars, or BINARY STARS. An ECLIPSING BINARY is a system when one star blocks light from another from time to time. OPEN CLUSTERS are star systems have a loose disorganized appearance. These can contain a few thousand stars.

  3. Vocab GLOBULAR CLUSTERS are large groups of older stars, some containing over a million stars. Galaxies called SPIRAL GALAXIES have a bar-shaped area of stars and gas that passes through the center. ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES look like round or flattened balls.

  4. Vocab • Irregular Galaxies are smaller than most galaxies, and usually have many bright, young stars and lots of gas and dust. • Quasers are active and young galaxies withy HUGE black holes at their centers.

  5. What is a Star System? • Most stars are groups of two or more stars, called star systems. • On a planet in one of these, there would be multiple suns in the sky.

  6. Multiple Star System • Systems with two stars are double stars or binary stars, and systems with 3 stars are triple stars. • Often in binary stars one stars is much bigger and brighter than the other • Astronomers can find binary stars if only one is visible. • The dim star causes the bright star to wobble with it’s galaxies
