3. Preparation of the Generator • Power Supply • Battery operated: Assure batteries are fully charged • Clinical: Plugged into a GFCI • Do not use extension cords • Leads • Check for tangles, frays, and loose jacks • Replace if insulation is worn • Repair loose jacks • Power • Make sure power is off • Reset output intensity to ZERO

4. Preparation of the Electrodes • Reusable Electrodes • Clean to remove residual gel and skin oil • Use alcohol or other approved cleaning agent • Most carbon-impregnated electrodes require a wet medium • If conducting sponges are used, moisten with water • Self-adhesive • Clean with soap and water • Follow manufacturer’s recommendations • Connect the electrodes to the leads

5. Patient Preparation • Rule out contraindications to the treatment • Determine appropriate electrode placement • Clean the treatment area • Apply and secure the electrodes • Explain the sensations to be experienced during the treatment • If applicable, give the patient a safety switch • Monitor the patient during the treatment

6. Termination of the Treatment • If the unit does not automatically power down: • Reduce the output intensity to ZERO and/or press the STOP button • Remove the electrodes • Wipe the treatment area clean • Check the treatment area for burns or irritation • Interview the patient to determine effectiveness of the treatment used

7. Maintenance Daily Maintenance • Clean exterior of the unit using an approved cleanser • Keep power cords and leads neatly stored Monthly Maintenance • Check leads for frays or cut/torn insulation • Check for tight-fitting jacks • Check power cord for frays, cuts, etc Annual Maintenance • Inspection and recalibration by an authorized technician
