  1. CHAPTER Studiesin 3 Galatians Law Or Faith?

  2. Galatians Introductory Thoughts • The basic error of the Judaizers • An appeal to the Old Law for justification • The Old Law was inferior to the New Law • (Hebrews 1:1-2; 3:5-6; 7:11-12, 24-25; 9:11-12)

  3. Hebrews 1:1 - 2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.

  4. Hebrews 3:5 - 6 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward,6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

  5. Hebrews 7:11 - 12 Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.

  6. Hebrews 7:24 - 25 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

  7. Hebrews 9:11 - 12 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

  8. Galatians Introductory Thoughts • The basic error of the Judaizers • An appeal to the Old Law for justification • The Old Law was inferior to the New Law • (Hebrews 1:1-2; 3:5-6; 7:11-12, 24-25; 9:11-12) • In Galatians 3, the Apostle clearly establishes that their affection for the Old Law had bewitched them. That they were acting foolishly in making their appeal to the Old. • Our text: vs. 1-4

  9. Galatians Law or Faith? (Rhetorical) • How Did They Receive the Spirit? • Our Text: Galatians 3:2; Acts 2:38

  10. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Whether the Holy Spirit as a “gift”; or salvation given by the Holy Spirit, the relationship we sustain with the Spirit comes through faith, not the Law)

  11. Galatians Law or Faith? (Rhetorical) • How Did They Receive the Spirit? • Our Text: Galatians 3:2; Acts 2:38 • How Were the Miracles Worked Among Them? • Our Text: Galatians 3:5; Hebrews 2:1-4

  12. Hebrews 2:1 - 4 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

  13. Galatians Law or Faith? (Rhetorical) • How Did They Receive the Spirit? • Our Text: Galatians 3:2; Acts 2:38 • How Were the Miracles Worked Among Them? • Our Text: Galatians 3:5; Hebrews 2:1-4 • How Are We Justified? • Our Text: Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:1-4, 9-10

  14. Hebrews 10:1 - 4 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

  15. Hebrews 10:9 - 10 Then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

  16. • Our Text: Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:1-4, 9-10 • The Purpose of the Law • Our Text: Galatians 3:19-24; Our “Tutor”

  17. Galatians Children of God • How We Become Children of God • Our Text: Galatians 3:26-27 • Faith: John 3:16 • Baptism: (“Put on” Christ) 1 Peter 3:21 • All of equal value in the Kingdom • Our Text: Galatians 3:28 • All in Christ are the seed of Abraham • Our Text: Galatians 3:29 • Heirship: Romans 8:16-17

  18. Romans 8:16 - 17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

  19. Galatians Concluding Thoughts • It is in the hearing of faith that redemption comes, not the works of the law • Those who respond to the gospel by faith and baptism are “in” Christ • In Christ is family (seed of Abraham) and heirship (inheritance in heaven)
