  2. IDB/GOJ PROGRAMME - RIVERTON • Programme partly funded by the IDB • Upgrade Riverton dump to a landfill • Improve operations at existing footprint • Install a new bridge, scale & scale house • Employ new equipment • Expand landfill by constructing a sanitary landfill

IDB/GOJ PROGRAMME – OTHER ASPECTS • Close dump sites across the island • Establish new institutional and legislative arrangements • National Solid Waste Management Act, 2001 • National Solid Waste Management Authority • Identify sites for regional landfills and transfer station • Public and community education

  4. RIVERTON LANDFILL - EXPANSION • Disposal area will be lined • Leachate will be collected in evaporation ponds • Methane gas will be flared • Monitoring wells have been installed to measure baseline conditions & for future environmental monitoring

  5. RIVERTON LANDFILL - EXPANSION • Existing footprint – 43 hectares • Expansion area – new footprint approximately 25 hectares

  6. COMMUNITY PROGRAMMES • Facilitators & SDC involved in the helping to establish CBO • Construction of a buffer zone with associated beautification • Implementation of a composting project • Registration of sorters & establishment of the Materials Recovery facility • Removal of animals and people for the active tipping face
