  1. Adolescence as Social Construction ENG 580

  2. Feedback Loop = Social Construction

  3. What expectations?

  4. What images?

  5. Adults may be less likely to read YA because of our perceptions of adolescents • Is YA literature legitimately literature? Some people think of it as sub-par precisely because it is written for/about adolescents. Same stigma is on literature. • Good YA lit breaks the mold of stock characters. Portrays characters in more complex ways. Authors have more freedom… More integrity in literature than in media. AND… • YA literature is still media. It is still a product. Publishers still have to sell it. • There are archetypes in ALL literature. The hero, the outcase, the villan…

  6. Social construction—products of society—but the “feedback loop” or the expectations are not “myths.” They are real. They do participate in rites of passage. • We put YA lit in boxes. Age ranges on books. This book is about x, so you should read it until you are y.
