Genre … The word genre originates from the French language. Which basically means type. Genre helps the audience to classify the style of the movie. This can be by the props used or the storyline. But its not always easy to identify the movie genre as sometime it can be more than one genre in a movies, for example “National security “ by Martin Lawrence. This film is both action and comedy. With thriller films you can easily confuse it with action films but normally thrillers are more hardcore , violence , more on the horror side than action.
What is a thriller film? Thriller films promote intense excitement , suspense, anticipation ,and anxiety. Most thrillers are to create thrills and keep the audience cliff hanging at the edge of their seats. The tension normally rises when the characters are in awkward situation or in a life threatening situation where escaping seems impossible. This is usually to characters having conflicts with each other . Characters in a thriller film can include convicts ,criminals, assassins, innocent victims , characters with a dark past ,terrorist, cops, fugitives, etc. The theme of thriller films include terrorism, political conspiracy or love triangles that later on leads to murder.
The godfather is one of the most popular movies . This isn't just a thriller film but its also mixed with a gagster genre. This film first appeared on our screen in 1972.The movie was based on a novel written by Mario Puzo. Ithink this is a mixer of thriller and gangster. I think this because it involve both of the qualities need of the two genres. I think this worked very well together as the film got so many nominees and awards. Brief story of thriller…
Narrative conventions • Narrative convention in a horror film are used to find a meaning . There are a series of codes and conventions considered when this takes place for example: • Genre • Character • Form • Type • The human mind needs a narrative to make sense of things . In a thriller film they use events that happens in reality , This makes the audience relate to the movie. There is always a beginning , middle and end.
Mise-en-scene Mise –en- scene comes from the French language. Which basically means “what’s on screen”. This include things such as camera shots and all the elements in front of a camera. These can be lighting , use of black and white or colour, placement of the characters on in the scene , props , costume, makeup and the set design. In a thriller film what you see on the screen are things suck as isolated houses, which is perfect according to what the story line might be. When it comes to props they use things like weapons, cars, bombs etc. Costumes depend on what the actor/actress is playing . For example if they were going to have high school, students they would be two groups popular and non popular . So the popular would be dressed in clothes that show more flesh and they usually look prettier than the other girls . So basically its stereotyped.
Audience … What do they out of it? you get thrills, suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. What do they expect? As time changes people also change. Now a days the viewers expect and want to see violence , blood death etc in a thriller genre based movie.
