  2. Bull Run Part One • A cured on July 21, 1861. • Took Place at Bull Run Creek. • General P.G.T. Beauregard of the confederates, he also fired the first shots at Fort Sumter. • Major General Irvin McDowell of the Union. • Had about 30,000 men in his command. • Had about 10,000 Men in his command. • Both the confederates and the Union showed signs of there lack of training. • Confederates already had their defense setup at Bull Run. Although there lack • of training.

Bull Run Part One The Battle Begins • Fighting begins Early. • Fighting was mostly hand to hand, bloody, and fierce. • Union Troops fought well for a majority of the day, but the confederates stayed strong. • The heat intensified and the body count for the Union Began to rise. • The Union tried many brigades to try and break through the Confederates lines. • As fighting got more fierce some of the Unions men started to run from the battle field. • Officers chased after them on horseback insisting they return. • The inexperienced officers actions lead some of the Union men to believe a retreat was issued. • As more and more troops joined the hasty it turned into a all out retreat to Washington. • Union troops discarded weapons and equipment along the way. • President Jefferson Davis urged his commander Beauregard to chase after the fleeing Yankees. • Turned out the Confederates were just as untrained as the Union and didn’t follow up on their actions.

Bull Run Part One • Union Lost a total of 2,896 men • Confederates lost a total of 1,982 men • Killed - 460 • Wounded - 1,124 • Captured or Missing - 1,312 • Killed - 387 • Wounded - 1,582 • Captured or Missing - 13 Spectators • About 500 spectators came from Washington to watch the Battle. • Most of them were News reporters and Congress Men. • Most observed from Centreville Heights about 5 miles from the battle. • Some ventured West to Warrenton Turnpike, a ridge overlooking Bull Run Creek. • The only people harmed were the few that went up close, 100-200 yards away. • Of the people that were up close most got caught up in the retreating Unions path and turned around or they were taken by the Confederates as prisoners.
