Laboratory Safety. Lab days are supposed to link lecture with real world applications. Following a few simple rules will prevent many mistakes. In the spirit of “ The Far Side ”, I have put together a few simple safety rules. There will be a quiz on lab safety at the end. No Practical Jokes.

  1. Laboratory Safety • Lab days are supposed to link lecture with real world applications. Following a few simple rules will prevent many mistakes. • In the spirit of “The Far Side”, I have put together a few simple safety rules. There will be a quiz on lab safety at the end.

  2. No Practical Jokes • Jokes, Horseplay, and Pranks are not tolerated • Safety First

  3. No Food or Drink • Chemicals can get on your hands and then into your mouth • Food could get contaminated • Drinks could be spilled

  4. Follow Directions • Never perform your own experiment • Follow directions according to the lab manual • Prevents Accidents

  6. Communicate • If confused…ask for help! • There’s no such thing as a dumb question… just dumb people who ask questions. (kidding)

  7. Take Your Time • Hurrying can cause accidents/ mistakes • There’s always tomorrow to finish

  8. Be Alert • Pay attention to your surroundings • Notice warning signs • Read all labels on containers

  9. Wear appropriate clothing No open toed sandals, long sleeves, or ties Caution: Make-up and Contact Lenses Preparations: Tie back long hair, roll up sleeves Dress Appropriately

  10. Think! • Use common sense • Most accidents are due to human error

  11. Read Labels • Read all signs and labels • Chemicals will be labeled • Clear liquid doesn’t always mean water!

  12. Equipment Usage • Use all materials properly • Commonly Used Instruments: Scalpels, Razors, Scissors, Microscopes, Glassware, Hot Plates, Chemicals

  13. EmergencyResponse • Know how to use the: • 1) Fire extinguisher and blanket • 2) Safety shower and eyewash station • Know your exits • Wash your hands
