  3. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Distinguished Level of Achievement, Foundation w/ Endorsement, and Foundation

Graduation Requirements • 4 English (Eng 1, Eng 2, Eng 3, and advanced Eng) • 4Math (to include Algebra 1 & Geometry) • 4Science (Biology and 2 additional sciences) • 3 Social Studies (W Geo or W Hist, US Hist, Govt and Eco) • 1 PE • 1 Fine Art • 2 credits of the same Foreign Language • 0.5 Speech - Professional Comm or Comm App • 0.5 College & Career Choices (class of 2018 & after only) • 8 Electives (2credits can be local credits) Total Credits - 28

  5. Distinguished Level of Achievement • Complete the Foundation Requirements • Complete Algebra 2 • Earn an endorsement

  6. Top 10% Automatic Admissions • Only students completing the Distinguished level are eligible for college admission under the Top 10% automatic admissions provision.

  7. Registration for 2019-2020 • Registration Process • Classroom presentations • Juniors – Class presentation and individual meetings Jan 28th, 29th & 30th • Sophomores – Class presentation and individual meetings Jan 31st, Feb. 5th and 6th • Freshman – Class presentation and individual meetings Feb. 8th, 12th and 13th • Course Selection • Meet with counselor • Course selections will be sent home by mail, with the student and will be available to see in Skyward. • ALL CHANGES MUST BE BEFORE MAY 10TH.

  8. Four credits in each of the four foundation subject areas to include English IV and Chemistry and/or Physics

  9. *Please consult your counselor, the MFISD Course Catalog, or the MFISD Academic Guide for additional information on other possible endorsement or pathway course selections.

  10. Dual Credit vs. AP Courses When to take dual credit and when to take AP

  11. DUAL CREDIT • Students must be college ready to take a dual credit course. • Sophomores may use PSAT, SAT, ACT or TSI to show college readiness • Juniors who did not take dual credit courses their Junior year may only use SAT, ACT or the TSI. If they are taking courses other than English they may still need other scores to qualify for these classes.

  12. AP COURSES • Test-prep course for college credit • You can petition for credit at the college you attend (content or elective) for students scoring a 3, 4, or 5. • Students should be motivated to learn • Open enrollment • No tuition, cost is for test only • Credit for course, does not factor into college transcript GPA (informational meeting immediately following for further details)

College Admissions – Testing • SAT Plus Writing (1st time taken) • ACT Plus Writing (1st time taken) • SAT Subject Test (Rice, UT Austin) • When registering for the SAT or ACT you may send them to 4 colleges for free (if you do not select this at the time of registration, they will make you pay a fee to send them) • TSI Assessment

  14. College Night Presentation • March or April we will have a parent night for parents and students to learn more about getting ready for post high school education. • We will notify you prior to the date.

AN AP STUDENT SHOULD BE: • focused • organized • motivated • self-disciplined • prepared for daily homework/reading in each AP class • willing to grow & be pushed through adversity Note – If your child does not possess the characteristics above, it doesn’t mean that they cannot be successful in an AP class. However, the course will likely be more of a struggle for them.

AN AP PARENT SHOULD KNOW… • Teachers are facilitators of learning. • Students are responsible for content. • A “C” in an AP class is NOT like a “C” in a on-level class • An “A” is RARE • Be mindful of the number of AP classes your child is taking at once. • Be mindful of work life/home life balance (church, extra-curricular, work, etc…) • Teachers are held to “College Board” standards. • Classes are rigorous. • Be mindful of your child’s strengths and interests when selecting AP courses.

  20. BENEFITS of an AP CLASS • Save money on tuition • Earn college credit • Help develop college-level academic skills • Can strengthen a college application and resume • May give the opportunity to skip some introductory college classes
