5.1 Polynomials and Polynomial Functions

- A polynomial in one variable (say, x) is the sum of one or more terms of the form axn where a is a real number and n is a whole number.
- A polynomial in several variables (say x, y, z) is the sum of one or more terms of the form axmynzp, where a is a real number and m, n, p are whole numbers.

- If a 0, the degree of axnis n.
- The degree of a monomial containing several variables is the sum of the exponents on those variables.

- The degree of a polynomial is:
- the degree of the monomial in it w/ the largest degree

- A polynomial function is defined as
- y = f (x) = P (x)

- Evaluating a polynomial function
