  1. Ultrasonic Radar System By Kenny McChesney

  2. Ultrasonic System • Transmits sound waves vs. electromagnetic • Same radar concepts, different assumptions • Sound waves travel at smaller velocity • Higher attenuation over distance • Same radar components except sensors • Transducers: convert electrical signals to acoustic • Two different operating modes • Pulse Radar • FMCW

  3. Functional Block Diagram

  4. System Setup Transducers -Knowles SPU0410LR5 Omni-directional ( -Kobitone 400SR160 ()

  5. Kobitone Example

  6. Results • Require a 10 dB SNR to perform successful signal processing

  7. Pulse Compression Current Example Without Pulse Compression Pt = 1 W τ = 100 us B = 10 kHz E = 100 uJΔR = 17.2 mm SNR = 15 dB Blind Range = 17.2 mm With Pulse Compression Pt = 1 mWτ = 100 ms B = 10 kHz E = 100 uJΔR = 17.2 mm SNR = 15 dB Blind Range = 17.2 m

  8. Improvements • Coherent Integration • Improve SNR by combining echo signals in the slow time • Ideal for stationary targets since phase is unchanged • Get more accurate noise information to improve experimental accuracy
