  2. Handling a Baby • Always support the neck. • Be very careful when lifting or putting down. • Shaken Baby Syndrome • When someone severely shakes the baby, usually in an effort to make the baby stop crying. • Can lead to brain damage, mental retardation, blindness, deafness, death.

  3. Feeding • Babies are difficult to schedule • No cows milk during the first yr. • Hard for the baby to digest, and has minerals the kidneys cannot process • Formula is OK as it has been modified for baby • Breastfed is best

  4. Preparing a bottle • Hold baby semi-upright • Keeps the nipple full of milk which prevents air from getting into baby • May warm the bottle • Make sure to test the temperature • DON’T USE THE MICROWAVE – heat unevenly • DON’T leave baby with bottle “propped” • Can cause tooth decay • Baby needs contact

  5. Burping • Burp a baby to help get rid of air • Baby may not burp each time • Baby will burp more on it’s own as it gets older

  6. Solid Food • Weaning • Shifting the baby from bottle to cup, usually somewhere between 9mth and 18mths • Solid Foods • Start around 6mths, when baby can sit up on it’s own. • Introduce new foods one at a time • Be prepared: baby will try to push food out with tongue. It’s messy  • Use soft foods and small spoons

  7. Bathing Baby • Cannot submerge baby until belly button has healed.Use a spongebath • Can use a baby tub or put them in the sink when they can sit up. • Gentle “no tears” soap/shampoo, washcloth • Crade Cap • A skin condition where scalp develops yellow crusty scales (dry skin) • Apply lotion and use a gentle brush

  8. Diapering • Disposable or cloth? Your choice • Diaper rash • Patches of rough irritated skin, can have open sores and bleed. • Sometimes can be an allergy to a diaper • Treat a mild case with diaper cream (zinc oxide) and expose to the air • If it get’s worse talk to a doctor

  9. Sleep • Newborn may sleep 12 – 20 hours a day • Older babies have at least 1 nap a day • SIDS • Sudden infant death syndrom • Cause is unknown • Putting baby on back can help prevent • Don’t put baby in bed with you • Crying it out? Good or bad?

  10. Dressing Baby • Dress baby in one more layer then you would wear. • Sleepers: a one-piece stretchy garment with feet • Onesie – lighter one piece body suit. • Socks/booties • Babies grow fast – don’t overbuy • Clothes should be loose, easy to clean
